Dr. Shapiro was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended Temple University for his undergraduate and medical degree. During medical school, he was voted into the Alpha Omega Medical Honor Society, graduating with honors in the top ten percent of his class. in 1970, he completed his Pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. As a major in the United States Air Force Medical Corp, he directed the Pediatrics and Allergy departments at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas. Dr. Shapiro then decided to further his training , and completed a two year fellowship training in Pediatric and Adult Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology at the National Jewish Hospital and University of Colorado Medical School in Denver, Colorado. In 1974, Dr. Leonard Shapiro and Dr. Ronald J. Rothstein opened Allergy and Asthma Associates in Reno. This was the first allergy practice in Northern Nevada to be headed by Board Certified Allergists. Over the last 30 plus years, Dr. Shapiro has provided expert care to thousands of children and adults who suffer with allergies, asthma and related diseases.

Dr. Shapiro is Board Certified in both Pediatric and Adult Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He has been selected by his peers to be in the Allergy Section of Best Doctors in America and is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care. He has been a participant in numerous clinical drug studies and has published in professional journals. He has served as both a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. In this capacity, he has trained medical students and residents in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology for over 30 years.
